What locations do you recommend?

We recommend picking one location for the shoot. If another location is in reasonable walking distance that works! The reason we do one location is because we like to get into a rhythm during the session and we don’t want that to get disrupted with driving & parking.

Small Towns with a lot of character...

  • Leesburg

  • Lucketts

  • Old Town Alexandria

  • Wineries & Breweries

For the Adventurous Couple, a few options that we love...

  • Hikes to a Waterfall or Overlook

  • Bull Run

  • Great Falls

  • Family Farm

  • Shenandoah National Park (added travel fee)

For the City Slickers...

  • Georgetown - Canal & M St.

  • DC's H St. or Union Market - Industrial look for our Hipsters

  • DC Monuments (AM Session)

  • Tidal Basin - Cherry Blossoms (AM Session + permit required)

  • National Art Museum

  • National Arboretum (park fee + permit required)

For the Sentimental...

  • Location of your first date

  • Location where you got engaged

  • Shared College or School

What do we wear?

Engagement Prep

One of the most frequent questions we get is what to wear for the connection session?  Typically this all depends on your style and where the engagement session is being held. Here are a few tips before diving into your closet.

Ladies

  • Dress for the occasion.

  • Avoid "loud" patterns, logos and graphics.

  • This is a great time to try out your hair and makeup trial.

  • Typically our sessions are held outdoors so wearing something that accents this type of setting is key.

  • Accessorize with a flower crown, bracelets or spunky earrings.

  • Anything that can create motion, like a loose flowing dress, always makes for really cool shots.

  • Check out our Blog Post for inspiration.

Engagement Prep

Gents

  • We recommend something casual or semi-formal that coordinates nicely.

  • Guys can accessorize too! Bring a cool hat, like a fedora or cowboy hat.  Leather suspenders are a nice touch.

  • Boots or semi dress shoes always complete the look. We like for you to stay away from flip flops or sneakers.

  • Taking advice from your fiance is usually good practice.

What Do We Bring?

Bring your adventurous side.  We may hike a mountain, put you in front of a waterfall, walk through tall grasses, canoe on a lake or venture thru the city so come with an open mind and willingness for adventure.

Props.  If you have something uniquely tied to you both, BRING IT! For example, if your fiance plays the guitar and that is a reason you fell in love with him...BRING IT! Keep store bought props to a minimal. We want it to be your love story, not Target's.  If it is chilly out we recommend an earthy blanket like a Pendleton for a "cozy" look or something to compliment your outfits.

Walking shoes. Ladies if you are wearing heels, bring some flats to walk from point A

to point B. We will be walking!

Misc. Tips

Have a glass of white wine or a pint of beer.  No seriously.  If you are the nervous about getting in front of the camera, there's nothing a beer or some white wine (no red - stains teeth) can't settle.  Please don't over do it, but this is a great way to take the edge off of being in front of the camera.  Just know that we are super laid back and your nerves will be gone within a matter of 60 seconds...seriously.

Please be on time.  We depend on the sun and it dictates how long we can get awesome photos.

Doggie Tips. If you want to bring your dog check out our blog on tips for bringing your pooches here.  Just be sure to let us know!

Offbeat Ideas. If you have something in your life that you want to incorporate let us know.  Like a classic car/truck, family heirloom or crazy off beat idea. We're all ears.

Pick a date and time

Engagement Sessions are shot at the golden hour for light, which is either right at sunrise or 1.5 hrs before sunset.  If you are planning for a DC location, we only shoot sunrise sessions at the monuments to avoid masses of tourists. Lastly, we only shoot engagement sessions on weekdays. The weekends are reserved for weddings. Thank you for understanding. If you have booked an engagement session, you can simply reply to this email to schedule a date/time. If you would like to book an engagement session, please reply to hello@bakerture.com.

Engagement Session Rain Policy; The final weather call will be made the day before your engagement session by the end of business (4pm). Our policy stands if there is a 30% chance or higher of rain as indicated by The Weather Channel, we will have to postpone to a new date. If there is any chance of thunder/lightning we will have to postpone.

6. Crafting Your Wedding Photography Timeline

While those beautiful wedding photos you see on Instagram and Pinterest look totally effortless, there's actually a whole lot of work going on behind the scenes to ensure they're just right (and if you don't believe us, just check out our Saturday behind-the-scenes shots on Facebook!). Don't expect you can just hire a photographer, invite them to your wedding, go about your big day and get the photos you'll cherish for a lifetime.

Just like your wedding takes a lot of planning and forethought, getting the shots you want does as well. However, it's not as difficult as you may be thinking, and a general timeline can be followed with spectacular results.

Here are some of our tips, so we can capture every magical moment, and you won't feel rushed or stressed in the slightest.

Crafting Your Wedding Photography Timeline

Rings, Dress, Shoes & Other Details

You want to allow for about half an hour to get all the little details: the rings, the shoes (yes, even the shoes!), the bouquet, the dress, etc. This is most easily done right in the bridal suite as you're getting ready and, with our two photographers, we can be in two places at once, so we can capture everything on both the groom's and bride's side.

Crafting Your Wedding Photography Timeline
Crafting Your Wedding Photography Timeline
Crafting Your Wedding Photography Timeline

Time Needed: 30-45 min.

Location: Bride/Groom Suite

Tips:

- Have all the little details you want photographed ready to go and untagged for your photographer, before they arrive. We call this the Bride Box + Groom Box.

- Have the rings all in one spot, most preferably with the bride.

- Bring your invitation suite, including the invitation, the RSVP card, the save the date, etc. It makes a lovely detail shot to add to your wedding album, particularly when paired with the rings or some of your flowers.

- The little details make all the difference, so have a nice hanger for your wedding dress. No need to buy something super-fancy, if you don't want to. A nice wooden hanger you already have at home will do.

- Don't forget the groom's accessories! If he has cool cuff links, fun socks or whatever it may be, let us know, so we're sure to get it on film!

Bride and Groom Getting Dressed

Don't skip capturing these important last moments of your single life! Again, with two photographers, we can snap photos of both the bride and bridesmaids and groom and groomsmen, without missing a thing!

Crafting Your Wedding Photography Timeline

Time Needed: 30 min.

Location: Bride/Groom Suite

Tips:

-Please ensure the rooms are clean, neat and tidy before photos.

- If you can, arrange for the bride and groom to get ready in bride and groom suites at your actual venue. The extra little touches there will go a long way, and make for better photos that overall flow with the rest of your day's style.

- If you and your spouse-to-be are planning to exchange before-the-wedding letters or gifts, this is a great time to do it!

Bride and Groom Individual Portraits

It doesn't take long to snap a few individual portrait shots of the bride and groom, but planning it into your schedule will ensure it's not a rushed process.

Crafting Your Wedding Photography Timeline
Crafting Your Wedding Photography Timeline
Crafting Your Wedding Photography Timeline

Time Needed: 20-30 min.

Location: Getting Ready Location

Tips:

- Preferably, you'll have some nice natural lighting from the windows in your getting-ready location, which makes for better portraits.

- The best time for these photos is right after hair and makeup and before all the commotion begins.

Bride/Groom First Look

Plan a good 15-20 minutes for your first look photos, if you choose to do them. The best spots for these are somewhere private (so a wandering guest doesn't butt in!) and shaded.

Crafting Your Wedding Photography Timeline
Crafting Your Wedding Photography Timeline
Crafting Your Wedding Photography Timeline

Time Needed: 15 min.

Location: Private shaded area at venue

Tips:

- If you're on the fence about doing a first look, we think it's a great time for the bride and groom to see one another privately, without all the hustle and bustle of the ceremony. It can be a special moment for just the two of you.

- Or, you can add in bridal party photos at the same time, so they don't take up time during your cocktail hour, if it starts right after your ceremony. After all, you probably put a lot of thought into your cocktail hour, so you should get to enjoy it, too!

- Even if you don't do your bridal party photos at the same time as your first look, it's still an excellent time to do the bride and groom couples portraits!

Ceremony & Venue Details

Finally! Something we can shoot that you barely have to worry about at all! After everything's set up, we just need about half an hour to snag a few shots of your wedding decor and details.

Crafting Your Wedding Photography Timeline

Time Needed: 20-30 min.

Location: Ceremony and reception venue

Tips:

- This is best done before your wedding guests arrive; one of us can be taking your first look shots, while the other is getting the decor and details, so we aren't missing a thing!

Wedding Party Photos

Wedding party photos don't take as long as you may think. Just about half an hour is all it takes, and we incorporate a mix of both traditional and fun shots and poses.

Time Needed: 20-30 min.

Location: Shaded area at venue

Tips:

- We work off your wedding party's vibe and personalities to determine the types of creative photos and poses we do, so everything feels natural and unforced.

Family Formals: Immediate Family, Extended Family & Friends

Family formals take a little more time, since there's almost an endless amount of people you may want to include, and, even with the best organization, it can sometimes be difficult to wrangle together all your siblings, grandparents, nieces, nephews and more into one photo.

Crafting Your Wedding Photography Timeline
Crafting Your Wedding Photography Timeline

Time Needed: 20-30 min.

Location: Ceremony or venue location

Tips:

- We'll send you a questionnaire 30 days before your wedding, asking you to name the individuals you'd like included in these photos. Filling it out is tremendously helpful as we plan.

- Organization is key to staying on time, so get your wedding planner involved in this task, or, a trusted member of the bridal party.

- Assign a specific family member or friend to help call names, and get everyone in one spot.

- Remind your family members at the rehearsal dinner that you'll need them for photos after the ceremony, and give them specifics of who, when and where.

Bride & Groom Session

After your ceremony and family photos, if you don't do a first look, this would be the time to get that hour or so of bride and groom portraits. The good thing about doing it after your ceremony, is that it may be around the golden hour (depending on timing), making for some excellent lighting and dramatic shots!

Time Needed: 20-30 min. (ideally 45-60 min. before sunset - the golden hour)

Location: Ceremony or venue location

Tips: Think back to your engagement session.  We're going to do something very similar on a shorter time scale.

Reception Details

Just like those pre-ceremony detail shots, reception detail photos are a great addition to your wedding album, too! All it takes is about half an hour before the guests enter the reception venue.

Time Needed: 20-30 min. before guests enter

Location: Reception site

Tips:

- Allow time before your guests arrive for the second shooter to grab photos of all the untouched reception details, from the cake to the centerpieces.

Sunset Photo (Optional but Epic!)

While it's certainly not required, a sunset photo, which only takes a few minutes out of your reception, is a spectacularly dramatic addition to your wedding photos.

Crafting Your Wedding Photography Timeline

Time Needed: 15 min. at or after sunset

Location: Reception venue

Tips:

- We'll set up a photo location while you're enjoying your reception, and then pull you away for a mere 5-10 min. to capture the beautiful sunset lighting.

- This typically occurs right after you eat dinner, so it doesn't interrupt your fun!

Weddings Through The Seasons

Winter Weddings

Winter Weddings can be a beautiful winter wonderland for your special day! However they do need a little more planning than your typical summer wedding. The sun sets around 4pm, meaning that all your photos must be taken before then. This means an evening ceremony will be unlikely. Planning your ceremony for the afternoon will be the perfect time to say your vows and get some amazing photos after it’s all done!

A winter wedding also means a chillier one! Odds are you’re gonna have your wedding ceremony inside to keep you and your guests comfortable but this just means you can pick the perfect decorations for that winter vibe.

Outdoor wedding photos are a must, even in cooler temperatures! Adding a shawl for you and your bridesmaids adds extra style to your wedding photos and gives you a little extra warmth!

Weddings Through The Seasons

Spring Weddings

Spring weddings are amazing because they will be the perfect temperature. There is also the chance of trees and flowers being in bloom, creating wonderful scenery! The downfall to this is a little thing called pollen. If you have a pollen allergy, you might want to keep some allergy medicine on hand so you’re not sneezing in all your photos!

One thing to be wary of is rain. April showers is a thing! Planning a backup location for your outdoor wedding is essential for any wedding but spring wedding are emphasized!

Summer Weddings

There’s a reason that summer is called wedding season! Warm weather, clear skies, and those gorgeous summer sunsets. The sun will set as late 8:30pm on somedays, giving plenty of time to take awesome photos. You might have to sneak out of the reception to get that golden hour glow, but it is well worth it.

One thing to keep in mind for summer weddings is that it does get hot! July & August can be hot and humid, especially in Virginia. Keeping a water bottle handy while taking photos is a good idea if you’re trying to keep cool. Even providing your guests with fans during the ceremony will keep your guests happy too!

Weddings Through The Seasons
Weddings Through The Seasons

Fall Weddings

Fall weddings are super loved for mainly one reason: that fall color! Leaves are changing, creating warm reds, yellows, and oranges that become timeless in your wedding photos. Even finding one tree with a bit of color will transform your wedding photos. The temperature during the fall time is also amazing! Mild temperatures make outdoor weddings great for guests and portrait time.

One thing to keep track of is when sunset will be. Sunset will vary if you have a September wedding vs a November wedding, so plan accordingly to when your ceremony time will be!

8. Getting Ready

Getting Ready

Getting ready is such a crucial part of your wedding day! From the very moment you wake up to the time that you’re walking down the aisle, so many details and moments happen that you are sure to want captured. First things first is to relax! Grab a drink with the girls and celebrate what’s about to happen. Nobody wants to be stressed on their wedding day so start your day off right. It’s hard to hand the reigns over to someone else, but go ahead and do it. Delegate some details to take a little stress of your plate. Your wedding day is going to be filled with so much emotion so take some time before your ceremony to take a deep breath and enjoy your relaxation.

There’s a lot to think about for the getting ready portion of your wedding so let’s break it down! Getting ready consists of hair & makeup, getting dressed, bridal details, and more! There are also moments that you might or might not want to do while getting ready. Do you want to exchange gifts with your fiancé before hand? Or do you want to exchange letters too? Are you gonna do a first look with your dad or mom? How about a first look with the bridesmaids? Or a first look with your soon-to-be husband? Think about these questions and figure out what you want captured while you get ready for your big day.

9. Details, Details, Details!

Details, Details, Details!
Details, Details, Details!
Details, Details, Details!

Details are so important to capture while getting ready. Even the smallest details will make the biggest memories and you want to remember all of it! Setting aside jewelry (rings!!), shoes, florals, invitations, and any other details that you want for your photographer to capture will guarantee amazing photos for you to remember always. Don’t forget about the groom’s details too! Cufflinks, suits, pocket squares, watches, boutonniere, and anything else you want immortalized should be set aside too!

10. Why You Want to Exchange Letters

Why You Want to Exchange Letters

After watching even the first minute of this wedding film, you should understand how meaningful it is to exchange letters before your ceremony. First, it sets the mood for the whole day! It fills you up with excitement and makes you eager to walk down the aisle and say, “I do”. Whether you have photo only or video too, getting these moments captured is an experience that you want captured!

Writing letters allows you to be there for one another before your ceremony and let your significant other know how excited you are to marry them. It definitely is a tear-jerking experience that you will always remember!

Why You Want to Exchange Letters

11. The First Look

The First Look

What is a first look? First looks are a new modern tradition where you get to see your fiancé before the ceremony. Getting to see one other in the amazing white dress and the spiffy black tuxedo is a memorable experience, one that might be more enjoyable spent alone. If you’re on the fence about a first look, that’s okay! In the end, it’s completely up to you, but here are a few reasons why we love first looks!

The First Look

Seeing each other for the first time one on one makes it less nerve-racking than seeing each other in front of all your family and wedding guests. It takes the pressure off seeing each other in front of so many people. When it’s just the two of you, all you have to focus on is each other, which is what your wedding day is all about. Plus it makes for an amazing photo and video set.

The First Look

First looks are a great way to see one another before the ceremony in private. There’s nothing like being nervous in front of 100+ people. Do yourself a favor and see one another for the first time in privacy. It lets you take a moment with just the two of you, to connect and share some wonderful memories on your wedding day.

The First Look

You’ll get some great photos from a first look but you’ll get more great photos after it! When doing a first look it allows your photographer to take your bride and groom photos, wedding party photos and family photos before your ceremony. This means you get to go to cocktail hour after the ceremony to say hello to everyone who just witnessed your marry your best friend.

The First Look

After doing a first look, your wedding jitters will be gone! The ceremony and reception will be smooth sailing since you’ll have nothing to worry about because you already got to see that special someone.

The First Look

When you decide to do a first look, you’ll be able to spend more time together considering you will see one another right after getting ready! WooHoo!

12. The Father-Daughter First Look

The Father-Daughter First Look

The Father-Daughter First Look

The Father-Daughter First Look is such a special and memorable experience that you want captured! The moment your dad sees you for the first time with your hair, makeup, dress, and that gorgeous smile of yours; it’s one for the books. Getting to document this once in a lifetime experience, is one of our favorite things and we hope it will be yours too!

13. Ceremony Prep & Tips

Ceremony Prep & Tips

The moment you’ve been waiting for all day; all year, has finally come! It’s time to hear the music playing, walk down the aisle and exchange those loving vows. There you see your bridesmaids lined up and the groomsmen on the other side. Your soon to be husband or wife is standing at the end of the aisle and smiling as they see you walking down. Your close family and friends are standing all around you and smiling. This is what it’s all about.

Lighting

Lighting is one of the biggest factors with photography, and even more so when it comes to your wedding ceremony. Inside weddings can be tricky if there isn’t enough light. We might need to bring flashes or extra lighting to properly shoot indoor weddings.

If your wedding is outdoors, planning when your ceremony will be is crucial. You don’t want to have your ceremony at high noon because the lighting will be way to harsh on your faces. Try planning to have your ceremony 1-2 hours before sunset for the best lighting.

Ceremony Prep & Tips

Traditions

Ceremonies are meant to be full of meaning, emotion, and memories. There are so many traditions that can be incorporated into your wedding ceremony that will hold so much meaning for you and your fiancé.

Design your ceremony with your fiancé to do what you both invision as something you want to shape your marriage around.

There are so many different rituals or ceremonies that might be meaningful to you and your fiancé that we want to capture for you!

Rules & Regulations

Some venues have rules that prevent us as photographers from going in certain places to get the right shots. For example, many churches have rules about going up on the altar so it’s best that you check with your officiant or priest to see where the photographers are allowed to go to make sure they aren’t breaking any rules.

14. The Family Portrait List

The Family Portrait List
The Family Portrait List

Family Portraits are so important on your wedding day. Many people travel to come help you celebrate and for many families it’s a time when everyone can be together. Documenting those special and rare moments will only enhance your wedding day. Below is a sample bride and groom family list that will help guide you in choosing who you want in your family portraits and this way we can just read off the list to make these portrait transitions easy-breezy!

15. Sunset Portraits

Sunset Portraits

All photos taken on your wedding day are important but the photos we take of just the two of you are ones are the ones that you will always remember. This part of the day is usually the only time when it’s just the two of you. This is your chance to truly connect with your new husband or wife on your wedding day and to actually spend some individual time with them! Portraits at sunset just add this romantic feel to your photos. The lighting is perfect, the colors are spectacular, and you’re newly married! This is the perfect combination.

Trusting Your Photographer

Trusting your Photographer

There are many details when it comes to those romantic sunset portraits and your wedding portraits in general, but don’t worry! With us as your photographers, you’ll be stress free when it comes to your portraits.

Many brides and grooms have a certain vision in mind when they pictures their wedding portraits. Many will even bring a shot list for your photographer. You might think this is helpful but in reality, your photographer knows what poses work and which ones seem forced.

Shot lists can create stiff looking pictures. If you hand your photographer a shot list that you found on Pinterest with “cute wedding day poses”, your photos won’t look as natural as you think they might. The best wedding day photos happen naturally and organically. Your photographer will be able to capture those candid moments that you won’t be able to plan on a shot list.

Trust your photographer when it comes to locations too! You might be wary if your photographer suggests a seemingly ordinary location, but fear not! You’d be surprised how amazing your photos will turn out by trusting your photographers vision!

16. Rainy Wedding Days

They say rain is good luck on your wedding day, at it does create some interesting and memorable photos! Although we know you’d prefer a sunny wedding day, do not panic if it does rain. Some of the best weddings happen on rainy days!

Be sure to take precautions, especially with your venue. Make sure that there is a rain plan in place in case it does decide to rain on your outdoor wedding ceremony.

As for the photos, we have it handled! We will be sure to do extra scouting in case it does rain, to make sure we have the best possible locations. We are also prepared for any lighting situations if it gets cloudy or if we have to go inside for photos. There is no need to worry.

Rainy Wedding Days

17. The Sparkler Exit

The Sparkler Exit

Ending your wedding day with a sparkler exit is a great way to finish up your special day. However sometimes due to time constrictions your photographer can’t stay till the very end of the night. One option is to do a “mock” exit with your wedding party or guests to capture this moment before your photographer leaves! Or we can plan to start the day later so your photographer can try to stay till the very end.

There is also a big difference between a sparkler exit and a glow stick exit. We definitely prefer the sparkler exit as it produces more light than a glow stick exit would. Glow stick exits are great and doable but sparkler exits have that extra “spark”.

18. Your Gallery Reveal

Your wedding photos will be ready in 6-8 weeks from your wedding date! If you booked our video team, your wedding video will be ready within 10 weeks. We always strive to beat these deadlines, however, sometimes in the busy season we do need the entire time to deliver. When your gallery is ready we will reach out to schedule a call and showcase our heirloom product line. Your digital gallery will be up for 1 year from your wedding date. If you would like for us to host your wedding photos (which will give you access to a beautiful online gallery display + print orders) after 1 year let us know and we can extend your gallery access.

19. Creating Your First Heirloom

Crafting Your First Heirloom Album

Do you recall how it felt to look through your parents wedding photos or even grandparents wedding album? One of the most vivid memories I have when Steven and I were getting married was when my grandmother, Fran, shared something I'd never seen before, her wedding album. When she opened up the old box it was stored in, she asked everyone to come join around the kitchen table like we had done so many times as kids. As she flipped through each page we all shared smiles, laughs, ooo's and ahh's, and tears of joy. It was a moment that will stick with me forever and I'm so grateful that she kept this heirloom for so long to share with her grandchildren. I look forward to doing the same with my kids.

In the digital age that we live, it's so important that we print our families history. There will come a time when our cellphones will fade, our hard drives will die. However, books will be picked up and looked at for generations to come. When I'm gone, my wedding album and even this photo of my grandparents, will be cherished by my children and grandchildren forever. My hope is that when the time comes I get to have a similar ceremony in our kitchen.

We'd love to help you preserve your family's history. It may take 60 minutes to pick out your favorite photos for an album, but I promise they will be treasured forever. Let me know when may be a good time to jump on a call or schedule yourself below.
